For the Random Restaurant Review, I used the Urbanspoon “shaker,” and I went with the first restaurant I got, which was Gilchrist Drug in Mountain Brook. I had planned to order my food when I got to Gilchrist, but I had not anticipated the crowd that would be there on a Saturday at 1:00 p.m.: high school and college students and grandparents with their grandkids. When I saw the grandparents, I remembered my grandmother taking my brothers and me to Brent’s Drugs in Jackson for a hamburger and a milkshake when we were youngsters.
Before I left the house, I looked up the Gilchrist menu on Urbanspoon and decided what I would order: the “hot beef on a bun.” Not only was the name of the sandwich intriguing to me, but “not a hamburger” was written on the printed menu beside the sandwich name.
I ordered the hot beef with mayo, mustard, bacon, and cheese. The available sides were cups of soup, salad, or chili or small bags of chips. I should’ve gotten a side…so glad I added the bacon and cheese. The almost-seven-dollar sandwich turned out to be browned ground beef on a regular hamburger bun. The condiments, cheese, and bacon gave me the extra energy I needed to walk three feet to my pantry and get some Melba Snacks to go with the sandwich so it would feel like a full meal.
If you are a grandparent keeping grandkids and need a place to eat Saturday lunch, Gilchrist Drug is the place for you. If you are a high school or college student who wants to see and be seen, Gilchrist Drug is the place for you. If you do not fit into either of these two categories but are curious about Gilchrist’s food, go for it. If you are hungry, another restaurant is the place for you.
